The Meadowlight Sisters

Recently, Valentina, a 7th-grade student, wrote a short fairy tale, which she entitled “The Meadowlight Sisters.” I had started a teaching sequence with her in which we explored narrative typology— especially fairy tales —, but not only that: we also worked on grammar topics such as connectors, the simple and continuous past, possessive pronouns and adjectives, among others. During this process, Valentina also realized the importance of writing and rewriting her text, since her knowledge was evolving with each lesson and her story could no longer remain the same. It was a very productive and also enjoyable process, as Valentina was able to see with her own eyes what her creativity and dedication to study could bring to life. Now, please, enjoy:

The Meadowlight Sisters

by Valentina

Once upon a time, in a big castle lived two princesses and the king and the queen: the Meadowlights. One of the princesses was spoiled when she was a child, her name was Philomena. She was generous and smart like their mom, but her sister, Marina, was not. She was also very strategist and dishonest like their father, and had black hair and black eyes like him. Moreover, Marina was very jealous and she grew up disappointed with her parents.

Then when the two princesses grew up, their dad chose the smarter and more beautiful daughter for the marriage. The king chose the youngest, and had three princes to fight for her: one of the north , another of the magic castle and another of fairy tales castle. The winner was the prince of the magic castle: he was called Darian. Some days passed and he was taken to the palace to get to know his future wife, Philomena; he liked her very much. Darian was very polite and kind, also he had brown hair in dreadlocks, but the prince was too naive. Since he was a child, he believed every lie people said to him.

The youngest would marry before the oldest, but Marina stopped the marriage by talking to Darian. She created a story about false flaws of Philomena. However, Philomena was passing by the room and she started to listen to the conversation. The fiancee tried to deny it, yet Darian did not believe her. Philomena felt sad and hurt. Therefore, Darian and Marina married.

Darian regretted his decision and went back to the castle, but she was already married with the prince of the North, happier than before, when she was with Darian.

And they lived happily ever after.
